Member Spotlights

Every month, we feature one of our members and all the great things they do to help animals. From individuals and nonprofits, to businesses and shelters, we are so grateful for our members and their passion to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves.

November – Adopt a Pet Shelter Plus
Shelter Plus is an exclusive program that supports both shelters and adopters, making the adoption process easier for everyone involved.


September – Karma Kat Cafe
Karma Kat Cafe was founded in 2018 on the principle that every cat deserves a life of love, safety and dignity. Karma is committed to making that happen through advocacy and education. Located in Mount Pleasant.


August – All About Animals Rescue
In southeast Michigan, there’s an organization that every rescue and TNR team knows. It’s All About Animals Rescue (AAAR), headquartered in Warren, with additional locations in Flint, Auburn Hills and Detroit.


July – Friends of Michigan Animals Rescue
FMAR provides a safe haven for cats and dogs in need, offering care, compassion and the opportunity to find loving homes. FMAR educates communities on responsible pet ownership and celebrates the unbreakable bond between people and animals.


June – Attorneys for Animals
Attorneys for Animals believes animals have inherent value and a purpose of their own. AFA works within the legal system and encourages efforts to ensure that animals are recognized, treated and protected as individuals.


May – Shelter to Home
With a mission to save animals from shelters in its community by placing them into foster care until permanent homes are found, Shelter to Home is working to create sustainable solutions to achieve a no kill community.


April – Happy Feet Pet Rescue
Founded in 2020 with a mission to provide second chances to animals, nonprofit HFPR opened its shelter in the Lansing area in 2022. Its mission is to raise awareness on pet ownership, to assist in temporary homes for dogs and cats needing a second chance, and to help match rescued animals with the best homes possible.


March – Saginaw County Animal Care & Control
With a mission to safeguard the well-being of animals and the community through compassionate care, adoption and proactive animal control services, SCACC is dedicated to promoting humane treatment, preventing cruelty and reuniting lost pets with their families. Through education, community engagement and innovative programs, SCACC strives to create a safer, healthier environment for both animals and people in Saginaw County.


February – Dog Aide
Dog Aide is an outreach organization that supports Detroit dog owners and their dogs by providing underserved families with access to resources, care, and assistance they need to keep their pets safe, happy, and healthy in their homes.


June – Julie Duke

Julie Duke was in her late 40s before she adopted her first pet, a toy poodle she named Mardi because the puppy was born on Mardi Gras Fat Tuesday. Because her mom didn’t want animals in the house when Julie was growing up, she didn’t know what to expect.

May – Ingham County Animal Control

Located in Mason, Michigan, ICAC provides animal control and sheltering services to the residents and animals of Ingham County. With a mission to serve the community, provide compassionate treatment and care, ICAC strives for the best possible outcome for all.

April – Little Traverse Bay Humane Society

Sustainably and respectfully serving pets and the people who love them with compassionate, comprehensive and exemplary care, Little Traverse Bay Humane Society rescues 900-plus animals each year. LTBHS is located between Harbor Springs and Petoskey, Michigan, and impacts the lives of thousands of pets within the community through invaluable programs in addition to veterinary services, boarding, grooming, doggy daycare and training.

November – Humane Society of Macomb

Tool & die shop owner George Fox was an animal lover who had a dream to someday build a shelter where homeless pets would be cared for and safe. In 1955, he and a group of like-minded friends bought seven-and-a-half acres of land in Shelby Township and began to raise money to fulfill that dream.

August – Scott MacKenzie

Under Executive Director Scott MacKenzie’s leadership, Charlevoix Area Humane Society achieved no-kill status, with live release rates as high as 98% annually. The shelter serves Charlevoix County, including Beaver Island. When capacity allows, CAHS will pull animals from other neighboring counties and from around the state.

May – Reva Laituri 

For more than 40 years, Reva has volunteered for Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Society (UPAWS) wherever needed, from a beginning of working in the office and manning the reception desk to later performing the many duties of an executive director during job vacancies. Reva is UPAWS longest serving board member at 24 non-consecutive years and has held several offices, including nine years as president, a post she currently holds.

April – Diana Newman

For as long as she can remember, Diana Newman has loved animals. Growing up, cats and dogs were always a part of her home. The family lived a block off the busy main street of Bellevue, Michigan, where a parking lot and alley behind the businesses were a dumping ground for unwanted felines.

March – Pet Angel Adoption & Rescue

Pet Angel is a nonprofit 501(c)3, no-kill shelter that specializes in socializing animals in a mostly free-roam facility. In 2023, Pet Angel shifted its focus to provide hard-to-place cats with love and a space to call their own. The organization specializes in bonded pairs, shy, scared and extra-need cats.

February – C.H.A.I.N.E.D. Inc.

With a mission to enhance the lives of 24/7 chained/outside dogs, C.H.A.I.N.E.D. provides life enhancing supplies and services, including safe, fenced kennels and yards, insulated dog houses, spay/neuter assistance, vaccines, flea/tick prevention, heartworm prevention, food assistance, treats, toys, love and, most importantly, owner education.
